Dr. Kelly Casperson, board-certified urologist, menopause and sexual health expert, TedX speaker, podcaster and author of You Are Not Broken.

As a urologist, sexual health expert, and host of the “You Are Not Broken” podcast, I’ve spent years addressing the real questions women face about their health and well-being. Today, I’m sharing 10 crucial health insights every woman should know, inspired by my latest podcast episode.

1. Postmenopause? Say Yes to Vaginal Estrogen

Postmenopausal changes can cause discomfort, but vaginal estrogen offers a safe, affordable solution. It reduces urinary tract infections by 50%, supports vaginal health, and enhances sexual wellness. The boxed warning on vaginal estrogen is outdated, incorrect, and scares 20% of women from using this product even after they've gotten a prescription from their doctor. We are currently petitioning to have this boxed warning removed. If you wanna get involved go to the Unboxing Menopause website here

2. Testosterone is a Woman’s Hormone Too

Did you know women naturally produce four times more testosterone than estrogen? Ovaries produce testosterone, which serves as a precursor for estrogen through a conversion process. Testosterone treatment has been proven effective in addressing low libido. Preliminary research also suggests that testosterone plays a role in supporting neuron function, mitochondrial health, and muscle health and support.

3. You Deserve More Than 10-Minute Doctor Visits

Unfortunately, this is what you get when your insurance dictates your health care. This will necessitate multiple visits with your primary care doctor or seeking a cash pay option. Your health deserves time and attention. Quick, rushed visits can’t provide the deep understanding and tailored advice you need. Advocate for meaningful doctor-patient relationships for a higher standard of care.

4. Redefine Intimacy

Intimacy is more than just “penis-in-vagina” sex. It encompasses emotional, physical, and sensual connections in all their forms. Let’s move beyond outdated definitions and embrace the full spectrum of human relationships.

5. Menopause is Normal—Suffering is Not

Menopause may be a natural process, but suffering doesn’t have to be part of it. With hormone therapy, lifestyle adjustments, and education, you can navigate this transition with confidence and comfort.

6. Yes, Alcohol Causes Cancer

Here’s a little-known fact: alcohol increases the risk of seven types of cancer. Dr. Vivek Murthy, Surgeon General of the United States, advocated for stronger governmental warning labels beyond the standard "Do not use if pregnant or operate heavy machinery." While drinking alcohol is a personal choice, it should be an informed one.

7. Osteoporosis Can Be Reversible

Your bones are dynamic, living tissues that can heal, remodel, and strengthen. Contrary to the common belief that bones are in a fixed state, they are constantly changing. With strength training, proper nutrition, and, in some cases, hormone therapy, osteoporosis can sometimes be reversed, helping you stay active and strong at any age.

8. Hormones Are Your Allies

Hormones like estrogen, progesterone and testosterone are not the villains they’re made out to be. Used wisely, they can protect against health risks, support longevity, and improve your quality of life.

9. Perimenopause is Real

Perimenopause isn’t “just in your head”—it’s a real, transitional phase accompanied by significant symptoms. Recognizing and addressing these changes is essential to finding balance and support during this important life stage. If your doctor dismisses your concerns about perimenopause, consider seeking a healthcare provider who understands the hormonal roller coaster that comes with this transition.

10. Movement is Medicine

Exercise is the ultimate wellness tool. Whether it’s yoga, strength training, or walking, moving your body improves brain function, metabolism, mood, and overall vitality. Think of movement as an act of self-love.
